Marketplace insurance explained
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum — what the metal actually means.
The Health Insurance Marketplace is where individuals and families can shop for and compare private plans, often with help paying the premium. This guide breaks down the metal tiers, subsidies, and enrollment timing.
The Health Insurance Marketplace is a U.S. program with no direct Canadian equivalent. Looking for Canadian public coverage instead? See how Canadian coverage works →

The "metal" doesn't describe quality of care — it describes how costs are split between your premium and your out-of-pocket spending.
Bronze
Silver
Gold
Platinum
The seesaw
Bronze generally has the lowest premium but the highest costs when you use care. Platinum flips that — higher premium, lower costs at the point of care. The "right" tier depends on how much care you expect to use.
Premium tax credits
Many people who buy through the Marketplace qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers what they pay each month, based on household income and size. Some lower-income Silver plan buyers may also qualify for reduced deductibles and copays through cost-sharing reductions.
Income thresholds change
Eligibility rules and exact amounts are set annually and can change based on current law — check HealthCare.gov or your state's Marketplace for your current, personalized estimate rather than relying on a general figure.
Enrollment periods
Open Enrollment
An annual window, typically in the fall, when anyone can enroll in or change a Marketplace plan.
Special Enrollment Period
Available outside open enrollment if you have a qualifying life event — like losing other coverage, marriage, or having a baby.
What to check when comparing plans
- Is my current doctor in-network?
- Are my current medications covered?
- What's the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum?
- Do I qualify for a premium tax credit?
- What metal tier fits my expected care needs?
- What's the plan type — HMO, PPO, EPO?

Does a higher metal tier mean better doctors?+
No — the metal tier describes cost-sharing, not care quality or network size. A Bronze and Platinum plan from the same insurer can have the same network.
Can I change plans mid-year?+
Generally only during open enrollment or with a qualifying life event that triggers a special enrollment period.
What if I miss open enrollment?+
You'd generally need to wait for the next open enrollment, unless you qualify for a special enrollment period.
Is Marketplace insurance the same as Medicaid?+
No — they're different programs. Depending on your income, you may be directed toward Medicaid instead of, or alongside, Marketplace options during the application process.
Know the trade-off. Choose with confidence.
