Hospital financial assistance thresholds are higher than most people expect. A family of 4 earning up to $128,600 may qualify for some level of assistance at many hospitals. Answer 5 questions about your situation. We will estimate which programs you likely qualify for and what to do next.
Other Factors That Affect Your Eligibility
Income is the primary factor — but it is not the only one. These additional factors can affect your application and in some cases help you qualify even when income alone might not.
Medical expenses can reduce qualifying income
Some hospital programs allow you to deduct significant medical expenses from your income when calculating eligibility. If you have high ongoing medical costs, mention this in your application.
Dependents outside your home may count
If you financially support dependents who do not live with you — such as elderly parents or children at college — some hospitals will include them in your household size, lowering your income-to-FPL ratio.
You can apply retroactively
Most hospitals have a retroactive application window of 240 days from the date of service. Even if you have already paid part of the bill or received a collections notice, you may still be able to apply and receive a refund or debt reduction.
Recent income changes matter
If your income recently dropped due to job loss, illness, or a life change, tell the financial counselor. Many hospitals will use your current income rather than last year's tax return if it better reflects your situation.
Assets are rarely considered
Unlike some government programs, most hospital financial assistance programs look only at income — not assets. Owning a home or having savings does not typically disqualify you from charity care.
A denial is not final
If your charity care application is denied, ask specifically whether you qualify for any other program — a sliding scale discount, a payment plan, or a prompt-pay discount. A denial on one program does not close all options.
How to find out if your hospital is nonprofit
Most hospitals list their tax status on their website — look for "501(c)(3)" or "nonprofit" in their About section. You can also search the hospital's name on the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search at apps.irs.gov/app/eos/. If it appears there, it is a nonprofit and legally required to offer financial assistance.
