Private Care Cost Planner

A structured worksheet for comparing the real cost and timeline of public vs. private care paths — before you commit to either one.

Why compare both paths side by side

Private care is often faster, but "faster" and "better value" aren't the same thing — and the true cost of private care usually extends past the sticker price on a clinic's website. Before deciding, it helps to lay both options out using the same categories, so you're comparing like with like.

The comparison worksheet

Fill in each row for your specific procedure or service. Use your provincial wait-time data and quotes from private clinics to complete both columns.

CategoryPublic pathPrivate path
Estimated wait time[check provincial benchmark][get quote from clinic]
Direct cost to you[usually $0 if covered][full quoted price]
Follow-up care included?[confirm with provider][ask — often billed separately]
Extended benefits coverage[usually n/a][check your plan's coverage %]
Continuity with your care team[usually yes][confirm records will be shared]
Travel/time-off-work cost[estimate][estimate — may be lower if faster]
Total estimated cost[sum][sum]

Factors people commonly forget to weigh

  • Private care isn't always fully private. Some private clinics still bill your provincial plan for the physician's fee, charging you only for facility or expedited-access fees — ask exactly what you're paying for.
  • Follow-up and complications may fall back to the public system. If something goes wrong after a private procedure, you may end up seeking follow-up care through your regular public providers anyway — worth confirming continuity of records beforehand.
  • Extended benefits rarely cover elective private surgery in full. Most plans have annual maximums or specific exclusions for procedures available (even if slower) through the public system — check your plan's fine print, not just the marketing summary.
  • "Faster" private timelines are not guaranteed either. Get a written estimate, not a verbal one, and ask what happens if that timeline slips.

Important: this is a planning tool, not medical or financial advice

Actual costs, wait times, and coverage vary significantly by province, clinic, and insurance plan — confirm all figures directly before making a decision.
