Waitlist Escalation Script
Use when a wait exceeds the clinical benchmark for your condition — a script for requesting re-triage and escalating through the right channels.
How to use this script
Check your province's published wait-time benchmark for your specific procedure before calling — this gives your request a concrete reference point.
Start at the clinic/facility level. Most delays get resolved here without needing to escalate further.
If unresolved, move up the escalation ladder below — each level has a different contact and a different kind of leverage.
The escalation ladder
- 1. Booking office / clinic coordinator — First point of contact. Ask directly about your position on the list and whether re-triage is possible given any change in your condition.
- 2. Referring or treating physician's office — Physicians can often request re-triage or flag urgency in ways patients can't do directly.
- 3. Hospital or health authority patient relations office — Every hospital has one. This is the formal channel for raising concerns about delays that haven't been resolved at the clinic level.
- 4. Provincial health ministry or wait-time office — Most provinces have a dedicated wait-time management office; this is the last resort for delays exceeding published benchmarks with no resolution in sight.
